It is the eighth most frequent element in the universe, known for its hard, bright silvery sheen; nonetheless, it rarely occurs in its elemental form in the earth's crust. It wasn't until 1823 that Swedish chemist Jöns Jakob Berzelius synthesised pure elemental silicon from sand.
